Voiceover Internet Protocol (VoIP)

Voice over Internet Protocol is hardware and software that enables people to use the Internet for telephone calls by sending voice data in packets using Internet Protocol rather than by traditional circuit transmissions of the public Switched telephone network. Some people use VOIP in addition to their phone service because the service is usually free or providers usually offer lower rates than traditional phone companies. For example, Skype would be classed as VoIP. To turn analog phone signals into digital signals tlogo_skype-svghat can be sent over the Internet. This function can either be included in the phone itself or in a separate box like an ATA.

These are the different stages that VoIP uses.

Overall I think VoIP is a great way to stay connected to people cheaply as most people have the internet its a fairly easy way to speak to people. However, if you or the recipient don’t have broadband or 4G then it may be hard to communicate as the sound will become difficult to hear. Also a major disadvantage is that emergency calls cannot easily be directed to the appropriate local emergency call centre.’
